The Moody Side of Electronica

When listening to trance, sometimes, melodic arpeggios don't cut it.  Sometimes, a straight 4:4 signature doesn't feel right.  Sometimes, you don't want a piano, strings, and a major scale riff.  Yes, sometimes you need the darker tracks.

There's some quality of dark songs that always seduces me.  They are intriguing, mystifying, and captivating.   They linger in your head and shape your mood.  I wouldn't think of them as depressing; though they have the ability to dampen the atmosphere.

I'd like to share with you some of my recent obsessions.

First, there's the (self-labeled) Trace Energy 2010 Anthem, "Renegade," by Sander van Doorn.  I do not dispute its anthem status, and I in fact like the direction this track takes trance.  Its an in-your-face single, like many trance anthems.  But, its brooding, moody, and dark, unlike many trance anthems.  Perhaps dark trance will go mainstream?

Second, check out Crystal Castles.  This Ontario-based duet of singer and producer has the capability of taking experimental electronica to the radio.  Their haunting compositions mix with a 80s-pop feeling to make perfect cross-over tracks, if record producers would be willing to listen.  "Crimewave" is off of Crystal Castles's freshman CD, and I would suggest picking up both their self-titled albums.

Third, "You Are Not Alone" by Mason is a wickedly chilling track.  With soft vocals, fast tempo, and rumbling, sustaining bass, "You Are Not Alone" is a lounge-worthy song that is not a bit cheesy.

Last, here's a resurrection of an old Faithless track--the Armin van Buuren remix of "Not Going Home."  It might be at risk for being overplayed at this point, though this track is still gripping and entrancing.

Enjoy!

Michelle Hunziker: Swiss Sexiness

When it comes to Switzerland, my knowledge of Swiss culture is limited to cheese, chocolate and Swiss army knives and unless you're living in Europe, the name Michelle Hunziker is most likely unfamiliar to you. Born in Switzerland, and Known to German and Italian television audiences, Michelle made a name early for herself appearing in ads for Armani, Rocco Barocco, La Perla, Colmar, Fuerte Ventura, Lovable and Swish at the age of 17. She has also had a lucrative acting career, appearing in numerous shows and movies in Italy and Germany. Though she has yet to hit it big stateside, she is one hot Swiss export we'd love over here. Too bad she is married... Either way, enjoy an assortment of pictures featuring Michelle Hunziker. She is now my favorite export from Switzerland.

Kanye's Greatest Hits

Though I was severely disappointed in the heavy use of auto-tune on his last album, 808s and Heartbreaks, Kanye West is still one of my favorite producers in the game right now. The unique way he's flipped samples has had my head bobbing since Jay-Z's Takeover and he has continued to impress following his entrance into the rap game. In an era where the most popular rappers are the ones with the most street cred, few were willing to give the young producer a chance to be a rapper. Love him or hate him, Kanye proved everyone wrong and went on to become a Number 1 selling artist as well as continuing to be one of the most sought-after producers in the game. Today, I thought I'd show you some of my favorite Kanye moments and Videos. Enjoy.

New Show on Bravo

Bravo hasn't really stood out to me as a network, and I normally hate reality shows, but there's one new show I can't wait to premiere. Check it out this Fall on Bravo. It's what I've always imagined goes on behind the scenes of these kind of shows anyway.

Bass Thumpin' Thursdays

I know it's been a while since the last edition of "Bass Thumpin' Thursdays" and for that, apologies are in order. Running the blog takes a considerable amount of time and effort the former of which I seem to have less of each day. In that consideration, I may decide to make BTT a bi-weekly staple instead of devoting a post each week to the cause. Regardless, some feedback would be much appreciated as well as some suggestions for artists and songs to be featured. On that note, I bring to you four music videos that made the cut this week. The reoccurring theme is hot chicks featured in electronic music videos. In retrospect, a Sash! video would have been appropriate here, but instead we'll kick things off with the Steve Angello and Laidback Luke remix of Robin S.'s "Show Me Love".

"Show Me Love" originally failed to make an impact when it was released in 1990, but after a re-release in 1993, became a #1 dance song and the debut single for Robin S.'s album of the same name. Heavily regarded as a classic house track, "Show Me Love" has been remixed and sampled extensively (In fact, The Pussycat Dolls sampled the original song on their 2005 smash "Don't Cha"). The version I bring to you is the most recent bass-thumping version: a remix by Swedish House Mafia's Steve Angello and, Dutch DJ, Laidback Luke. Enjoy.

Steve Angello & Laidback Luke feat. Robin S - Show Me Love

Though the next video features a hot chick at around the 2:00 mark, be warned that there is a horrible guy to girl ratio for a trance video (2:1). Maybe that's the reason Rockstar decided to use Eric Prydz' "Pajanoo" on the soundtrack and feature the song in the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony. Either way, the track is more contagious than the flu and repeated listens will drill the melody in your head like and offshore oil rig. Hopefully the end results will differ from the BP oil fiasco.

Eric Prydz - Pjanoo

Thirdly, I would like to present a video by a trio of Belgian dance musicians named Lasgo. Lasgo is comprised of Peter Luts and Jeff Martens as the producers and singer Jelle Van Dael who provides vocals and eye-candy. As an aspiring producer myself, I realize that, in order to succeed, I should keep a hot blond in tow. However, if I could attract hot blonds, I probably wouldn't get much work done. Giggity.

Lasgo - Out of My Mind

Lastly, I would like to present a video by Elena Alexandra Apostoleanu a.k.a. Inna. Inna is a dance singer from Mangalia, Romania and her debut album "Hot" reached #1 on the European dance charts partly due to the #1 smash of the same name. Inna's infectiousness has yet to reach state side but I predict that this ravishing Romanian will soon show the world just how "Hot" she is.
