Bass Thumpin Thursdays - Gorillaz on Deck

You can look long and you can look far, but you still may not be able to find a group as inspired and original as The Gorillaz. Started as a musical project in 1998 by Damon Albarn (The lead singer and songwriter of Blur) and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl, The Gorillaz were conceived while the two were living together in London.

Hewlett: We were flatmates. One day, we were home watching MTV with our eyes just kind of glazed. Because if you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell - there's nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a cartoon band, something that would be a comment on that.

Albarn: We're the generation whose stars come from Pop Idol and celebrity-wrestling shows. And it's all a bit like a cartoon, really.

The result was a Virtual Band that lived in a fantasy world filled with wonder, amazement, and beauty and an eclectic sound that incorporates a diverse selection of styles, as well as artists, into their music. The formula has proved successful, selling millions of records worldwide and solidifying The Gorillaz as a headlining act and one of the most inspiring groups to ever make music videos.

The White Stripes - Under the Great Nothern Lights

In the summer of 2007, shortly after the release of their 6th album Icky Thump, The White Stripes headed north of their hometown of Detroit to embark on an ambitious journey across Canada. The plan was to play a show in every province and territory in Canada, from B.C. to Newfoundland to Nunavut.

We wanted to play out of the way towns that don’t usually get shows…the shows are better, it’s better for the people, it’s a better experience, it’s way more unique, something interesting is going to happen…hopefully.

Bass Thumpin' Thursdays

Well it's Thursday, so you know what that means: A brand new Futurama. Also Bass Thumpin' Thursdays. Speaking of Futurama, A song caught my attention during the movie"Bender's Game", titled Rocketship by Kathy McAarty. The first 20 seconds or so are pure sample fodder, and just begging for a remix. The rest? Well... I'll let you be the judge. Also, Check out what the thieving, gambling, chain-smoking, whore-mongering, alcoholic robot Bender has to say about piracy.

Next up is a song that isn't so new but takes me back to one of my very first live concerts: Foo Fighters' "Monkey Wrench". The Foo Fighters have been in my rotation for almost 15 years and still keep pumping out hits, but it was their break away single (and the accompanying video) that first made me take notice of their prowess. Check out the video and see if you can name one of their other songs playing in the elevator. The Answer is below the video.

Answer: Big Me

Finally is a video from 90's punk-revival band Rancid, titled "Ruby Soho". Again this takes me back to one one of my first concerts (Actually, the same concert). The line up was Foo Fighters, Transplants, and, a band I haven't heard of since: Cave In. Tonotopik know what I'm talking about. Anyway, Rancid has had a cult following since it's inception in 1991 and though group members Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman have been involved in other punk projects including Operation Ivy and The Transplants, They remain the two core members of Rancid to this day, despite a couple of shake-ups in their line-up.

The Roots - How I Got Over

You may know the roots as the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, but long before they set up stage in 30 Rock (30 Rockefeller Center in New York City) The Roots have held it down as one of the best live acts of the past 20 years. Black Thought's impeccable rhyming accompanied by ?uestlove's funky drumming has garnered them a place in not just hip-hop history, but music history as a whole. My first exposure to them was with the single "Seed 2.0" from their awesome 2002 album Phrenology, and with that one hit, I was addicted for life. Check out their new video "How I Got Over" from the upcoming album of the same name below, "The Seed 2.0", and the original song that inspired it, Cody ChesnuTT's "Seed". Be warned: The Roots are a gateway drug that may lead to more good music.

Legos Galore!

Like any red-blooded American, I spent a fair share of my youth playing with my favorite Danish export: Legos. Tonotopik's previous post reminded me why I love those little blocks. They are so versitile that people all over the world are finding uses for Legos beyond simply building with them. Case in point: Lego USB hubs, routers, USB drives and a fully functional Lego Star Wars fooseball table (though any rough play would surly destroy the table like the Death Star did Alderaan. Check 'em out.

It should be worth noting, however that none of these products are officially licensed by Lego. Apparently, Lego is too busy rocking out to give us what we really want
