Style Wars: The Graffiti Movie

Of all the aspects of classic hip-hop including break dancing, DJing, and emceeing, graffiti has often gone overlooked in modern day hip-hop. Recent legislation has enabled tougher penalties for taggers and most graffiti is now associated with gangs trying to mark their territory but there was a time when writing your name on a train actually meant something. It was an artistic expression that let everyone know who you were as well as a rebellion to the mass commercialization of urban areas. With that I'd like to bring you Style Wars a documentary on tagging that originally aired on PBS in 1983. Check out this look into the Graffiti sub-culture of New York in the 1980's and reminisce about Hip-Hop when it was just a baby. You don't want to miss this one.
Graffiti is one of the few tools you have if you have almost nothing.
And even if you don't come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can
make someone smile while they're having a piss
